“Not good enough.”
“Not rich enough.”
“Just not enough.”
These words are randomly thrown at children coming from incomplete family. However, the question is: do we care ENOUGH about how they survive, how they are being educated, and how they are being sheltered without the complete support coming from their parents?
Life was one long struggle for Rhizza Marie Mayor. The absence of her father entailed financial and emotional challenges for her, especially in the area of her studies.
“There was a time, when I was at a young age that I cried asking God, ‘Why?’ But as I grew older, I realized that crying alone won’t help, so I decided to be a working student in order to support my own studies,” Rhizza said.
Decisions determine destiny—how true these words are for Rhizza. Instead of quitting her studies due to lack of financial assistance, she took every opportunity to save money. During her first year in college, she worked as a childcarer to support her studies. She was also allowed by the same employer to work as a pump assistant in a gasoline station during her semestral breaks.
“God has always been good to me. He let me enter college and enroll in my dream career, which is to be an educator. Then, another blessing came when Pastor Tim told me that I could apply for a scholarship in Operation Blessing’s Back-to-School Program. I am very thankful, and so is my mother, for she was really praying for this scholarship. I am blessed because I became part of BTS at the time I needed financial support the most,” the humble student from Nueva Ecija shared.
The odds were stacked against Rhizza until she finally committed her life to God. “I find comfort in what is written in Ecclesiastes 3:1, that to everything, there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. God really has a perfect timing for everything and when you trust Him, all life’s hurdles will be easier to deal with,” Rhizza said.
Just when hope seemed to recede, the generosity of BTS donors fueled Rhizza’s motivation to achieve the pinnacles of success and carve out her own story. Currently, her name is on the graduating list of Nueva Ecija State University and just waiting for her graduation ceremony.
