“I went to the health center yesterday to have my blood pressure checked and found out it was high, but there were no available medicines. I was informed there will be a medical mission here today, so I decided to come to see if I could ask for medicines,” shares Norma Fere-Ira, one of the first beneficiaries who arrived at OB’s Medical Brigade in San Vicente, Roxas, Oriental Mindoro.
Despite having painful legs, 73-year-old Norma woke up early and started walking down the mountains with her husband, Juan, for 45 minutes.
During the check-up, Norma’s blood pressure and blood sugar were found to be high, while Juan mentioned that he sometimes experiences nausea, and his lower back is painful. Both of them received medicines and vitamins for their health concerns.
“Thank you. We don’t have money to buy medicines. Every time we are sick, we just pray to God and trust Him to heal us,” says Juan, trying to hold back his tears.
They were also served porridge to fill their empty stomachs since they did not have anything for breakfast. But besides medicines and food, they also received an unexpected blessing that made them very happy.
Norma and Juan live in a mountainous sitio of San Vicente where access to electricity is not available. Right on time, OB’s partner, Watts of Love, an organization giving out solar lights to families without electricity, was also present at the Medical Brigade.
Norma received a solar light to replace their kerosene lamp.
Aside from having a free source of light now, Watts of Love encouraged them to save the money they would have otherwise spent on kerosene in the coin bank box of the solar light. Once they save enough money, they can start a new livelihood.
“I will buy chicken once we save enough money,” says Norma smiling.
Norma and Juan went home very happy and blessed. Norma said she felt God’s love, care, and provision for them through the Medical Brigade and the distribution of lights.
