Ricardo Miralles, 64, a father of four, used to be a lively and active factory worker, doing his best to provide for his family. But not until he started developing Parkinson’s disease.

“It started out with me always feeling tired. I felt weak. I could not get up, and I could not do my job anymore, so I resigned and just stayed at home.” By this time, he was working as a construction worker.

“My Parkinson’s disease continued to worsen,” Ricardo narrates.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a brain disorder that causes unintentional and uncontrollable movements like shaking. It also causes difficulty with balance and coordination. It usually affects men and is the result of either genetics or environmental factors.

He went to the medical mission in Old Balara, Quezon City on his own, despite the tremors and shaking. He can’t stand for a long time. He had difficulty walking, talking, and even writing to fill out the forms.

For months, Ricardo had also been suffering from a toothache that became extra painful when consuming something crunchy or cold. “If I had extra funds, I would have it extracted. But it’s a good thing that, at just the right time, I heard that there will be a medical mission here. So, I grabbed the opportunity.”

Through our medical mission, Ricardo saved thousands of pesos as he had two of his teeth extracted. He was also given medicine, antibiotics, and vitamins—all for free!

“This is a huge help for me and for the other beneficiaries who do not have much money. Thank you, Operation Blessing!”
