Super typhoon Yolanda left the people of Guiuan, Eastern Samar homeless, hopeless, hungry and hurting as gloom loomed in this once beautiful town.
The children of Guiuan, like in most parts of the Visayas battered by Yolanda, were the most adversely affected by the super storm and bringing their joy back was a serious challenge.
From Cagayan de Oro City, Police Superintendent Rey Padulia led a team of 101 police officers who were deployed to Guiuan to help restore law and order.
“Nakalulungkot ang ganitong kaganapan pero kailangan talagang magtulungan. Kailangan naming siguruhin na maprotektahan namin ang mga dumarating na tulong para sa ating mga kababayan para masiguro na mabibigyan sila ng tulong.” (It is really sad to have this kind of disaster and so we must really need to help one another. We need to ensure that we protect the people providing the relief operations here so they can help the people who badly need them.),” he said.
He further adds: “Kasama rin sa trabaho namin ay tulungan ang komunidad na bumangon at marehabilitate lalong-lalo na ang mga batang biktima ng ganitong sakuna.” (It’s also part of our duty to help the community to rise and to rehabilitate most especially the children who are victims of this kind of disaster.)
Supt. Padulia found a happy partner to accomplish their team’s mission: Superbook!
Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines, the humanitarian arm of CBN Asia, has included free screening of Superbook, the animated Bible-based TV series, in its feeding programs and trauma counseling for children and the response was overwhelming.
Even the cops were pleasantly surprised to learn how Superbook has impacted, not only on the children, but to them and to the whole community as well.
“Ngayon lang namin nalaman ang tungkol sa Superbook. Maganda siya at napakalaking tulong ito sa mga bata,” he said.
Superbook has brought the groove back in Guiuan and it is no longer a strange sight to see cops and kids, moms and dads singing and dancing to the Superbook song.
“It’s wonderful and Superbook is a great help to the children especially at this time and our task force members were happy about it and so we join in the dancing and the singing. I hope Superbook is here everyday,” Supt. Padulia happily said.
To spread the circle of happiness, the Guiuan Municipal Police Station has opened its grounds for all Superbook activities and even offered protection to the Operation Blessing team as they continuously reach out to more people in the remotest barangays where hope and aid are still needed most.
