As typhoon Mario ravaged Luzon this past weekend, many may have forgotten about the threat of the Mayon Volcano’s eruption. The Mayon had seemingly calmed down over the last few days, but according to PHIVOLCS, this lull is deceptive, and could mean that the volcano is building up more strength, resulting in a more intense eruption which is expected in the next few weeks. A crack on the southwest side of the volcano indicates that the lava will most likely pass through the vicinity of Legazpi, Daraga and Camalig.

With the volcano at alert level 3, residents within the 7-kilometer radius have been in evacuation centers for more than a week now since they were forced to leave their homes last September 17.

An Operation Blessing mobile water station is now on its way to Bicol to provide clean drinking water for the residents. It will be set up in Baligang Elementary school in Brgy. Baligang, Camalig, where there has been a diarrhea outbreak due to a contaminated water supply. OB is adopting evacuation centers to provide relief by distributing food packs to the evacuees.
OB will also conduct medical check-ups in the different evacuation sites. Livelihood skills training will also be conducted for the residents to make their stay in the evacuation center productive, and to help sustain them even after they have gone back to their homes. There will also be screenings of Superbook, a cartoon show rendering of Bible stories, which will help facilitate trauma and psychosocial counselling for kids and their families.
Local relief and medical teams are already in place in the affected areas, and OB will continue to coordinate with the local government units to find out the residents’ other needs in the weeks to come. It will take the region 2-3 months to recover once the volcano erupts. They will need all the help they can get.
