For more than 20 years as a widow, Vangie Ilao felt a little attached to her birthdays because it meant she could go out with her family and have an intimate celebration with her two children, daughter-in-law, and grandchild. But on the day she turned 55, and decided to exchange her day for a medical mission, things got a lot bigger than she imagined.
Vangie’s daughter, Shiela Ilao, is a project coordinator of Operation Blessing. On the day of her mom’s birthday, she was set to conduct a 2-day Mobile Clinic Mission in Calamba, Laguna in partnership with the 2nd Civil Relations Group of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
Asked how she felt learning about her daughter’s schedule during her special day, Vangie said, “I am used to Shiela being away from us doing missions with OB, I mean even if this is in conflict with our plans, I have nothing against it because I know that whatever she is doing, it’s for the Lord and His people.”
But days before the mission, Shiela asked her mom if she would want to join the mission instead and lend a hand in the registration of the beneficiaries. “I did not second-guess to say yes,” she said delightfully. During the mission, she helped coordinate with the health workers of the barangay to register the patients and document the forms needed.
Capping off the first day of mission, the staff, volunteers, and even partners from the military had dinner together and did not forget to pray for Vangie and sing her the birthday song. “I felt so much love that night. I thank Operation Blessing that I found a new family in them and I praise God for everything He is doing to make my life more meaningful for Him.”
A worrier-turned-worker and life group leader, Vangie is a living testimony of what is written in the Word that if we delight ourselves in the Lord, He will give us the desires of our heart.
