“I was told I wouldn’t live past 18… but I’m still here.”
These are the words of Mary Joy Pillas, 36, who has spent most of her life quietly at home and fighting a battle not many can see.
Born with polio, Mary Joy is the third of four siblings. While her two older brothers were born without disabilities, she and her youngest sister, Jena, both have physical limitations. Their parents, with only a meager income, have done their best to care for them.
Mary Joy never went to school. “I was afraid,” she shared softly. “I feel like I’ll just be bullied.” She stayed home, hiding not only her disability but also her dreams.
As a child, she lost sight in one eye after someone poked it with a stick. Doctors also warned she wouldn’t live past 18 due to a weak heart. But by God’s grace, she’s still here.
For over four years, she had no functioning wheelchair. “It was hard. Even praying didn’t feel natural to me anymore because of everything we’ve been through,” she admitted.
Despite this, Mary Joy still has dreams. She loves applying makeup and hopes to own a salon someday.
“I want to have my own salon one day. I know I can’t yet… but now, maybe I can start going after it.”
Thanks to Jena’s determination, that dream feels possible.
Jena, who also has polio but learned to walk, sought help from the barangay’s social welfare office. Despite raising three children, she did not forget about her sister. “I just want her to be okay. She deserves it,” Jena said.
Her prayers were answered when Operation Blessing came. Mary Joy received a brand-new wheelchair—her first in many years.
When the team visited and prayed for her, Mary Joy turned emotional. “Thank you so much. I never thought someone would come for me.”
Now, with her new wheelchair, Mary Joy is filled with hope, ready to move forward, dream again, and live the life she once thought was out of reach.
